What exciting weather we're having! 70 degrees on Friday...in February!
Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade were all introduced to basketball skills and concepts. Time was spent on progressive dribbling skills ( typewriter, dribble-spin, under-the-leg, etc). "Fill 'Er Up" challenged student's cardiovascular fitness while introducing shooting concepts and emphasized moving while dribbling. Class concluded with a dribble relay challenge.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade participated in a practice fitness test. This year we will be incorporating test components from the FitnessGram Fitness test. This is a widely used standard of fitness measurement throughout many schools. In the younger grades, we have fun doing it rather than focusing on outcomes and performance. The second half of class started into our basketball unit.
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grades took part in three components of the FitnessGram Fitness Test including sit ups, push ups and the pacer test. This was a practice test. Students will take the actual test in March. In the middle school, the focus of the test is for students to personally evaluate their fitness level, learn how to test their fitness levels in the future and to make improvements on their current abilities. Setting appropriate goals is important for students to be practicing at this time. Setting goals will be one of our objectives throughout the next couple months while we work towards the fitness test. The last half of class consisted of 3-4 minutes of skill development, followed by a 3 on 3 game and a dribbling game to wrap it up.

February 7-11
Due to a leak in the roof of the gym, there will be no pictures for a period of time because my camera was damaged.
Kindergarten, First, Second and Third grades- started into a cooperative activity called Gilligan's Island. In this game, everyone must get to the ship to win. Everyone starts on a boat in the middle of the ocean and the 2 survivors on the island have the task of bringing the first people to shore. Anyone touching the water is sent back. Many students love this activity and I love it too because of all the cooperation that's involved. One student told me she played this game at her house with neighborhood friends. The second half of class was spent learning about posture. This is incorporated into Circle Crab Soccer, developing muscular strength.
Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grades- discussed spatial awareness concepts in after participating in a ladder-style badminton tournament.
Seventh and Eight Grades- discussed advantages/disadvantages of long and short implements (accuracy/ power/force) after participating in a ladder-style badminton tournament.

January 31- February 4
I decided to tackle some other projects after coming back from winter break. My apologies for the inconsistency it caused in the blog. It's up and running again and should be rather consistent from here on out.
Kindergarten, first grade and second grade worked their way through jumping stations this week. They started with a simple game I refer to as star wars trying to outsmart their opponent and improve their balance. Then we were off and running through stations such as long jump, jump the snake, long rope swing, revolving door, obstacle course and hopscotch. Hoping to finish with Gilligan's Island, many classes ran short on time. We'll come back to Gilligan's Island next week.
Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades focus for class was offense and defense. Students warmed up playing Triangle Tag, a game where students form a small circle of 3 and the 4th person on the outside of the circle tries to tag a selected player in the circle of 3. This challenges students offensively, defensively and together as a team. Right after this we played Capture the Flag, a favorite among many classes. Teams were given time to strategize before each round. A discussion about offense, defense and their teams planning effectiveness occurred after several rounds of play to end class.
Sixth, Seventh and Eight Grades classes participated in Capture the Flag. An emphasis was placed on teams abilities to plan together and implement their plan as a team. Offense and defense strategies were discussed at the end of class. Eight graders gave specific responses about how changing certain rules can favor the offense versus the defense more. A tag challenge began class, leading into Capture the Flag.
