What exciting weather we're having! 70 degrees on Friday...in February!
Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade were all introduced to basketball skills and concepts. Time was spent on progressive dribbling skills ( typewriter, dribble-spin, under-the-leg, etc). "Fill 'Er Up" challenged student's cardiovascular fitness while introducing shooting concepts and emphasized moving while dribbling. Class concluded with a dribble relay challenge.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade participated in a practice fitness test. This year we will be incorporating test components from the FitnessGram Fitness test. This is a widely used standard of fitness measurement throughout many schools. In the younger grades, we have fun doing it rather than focusing on outcomes and performance. The second half of class started into our basketball unit.
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grades took part in three components of the FitnessGram Fitness Test including sit ups, push ups and the pacer test. This was a practice test. Students will take the actual test in March. In the middle school, the focus of the test is for students to personally evaluate their fitness level, learn how to test their fitness levels in the future and to make improvements on their current abilities. Setting appropriate goals is important for students to be practicing at this time. Setting goals will be one of our objectives throughout the next couple months while we work towards the fitness test. The last half of class consisted of 3-4 minutes of skill development, followed by a 3 on 3 game and a dribbling game to wrap it up.
